DreamWorks May Acquire Classic Media

Rocky and BullwinkleUpdated 7/28/12. Classic Media is a worldwide company that owns the rights to many of the most beloved cartoons and cartoon characters we know, such as The Rocky & Bullwinkle Show, Felix the Cat, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and even She-Ra. Variety reports they may be selling sold those cartoon characters to mega-animation company DreamWorks, the company responsible for the Madagascar movie franchise, as well as TV cartoons Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, The Penguins of Madagascar and the upcoming Dragons: Riders of Berk. With such a large, classic cartoon catalog at their fingertips, DreamWorks could churn out not only TV cartoons and holiday specials, but also create feature films based on those characters. Hopefully, DreamWorks would shepherd those cartoons wisely with plenty of talented folks on board. Otherwise, we may end up mourning the sale.

Fantasy Cartoons on DVD

The HobbitThere was a time when fantasy stories were more easily told in animation because visual effects were not nearly so advanced as they are today. Stories like The Hobbit and The Last Unicorn were no less effective, however, because they were cartoons. This list of fantasy cartoons on DVD represent some of the best magical stories told in animation, perfect to give as a gift or add to your own collection.

Penguins of Madagascar Cast

Penguins of MadagascarWhen I watched Penguins of Madagascar the first time, I did more than one double-take at the voices of the cast. Could it be that Golden Globe winner Sacha Baron Cohen was providing the voice of King Julien in this lowly Nickelodeon cartoon? So, I checked. Here's the skinny on the sound-alike voices of the Penguins of Madagascar cartoon.

Cartman tries to warn everyone that their lives are at risk if they participate in the egg hunt. No one believes him until he produces video evidence of the mystery being. Talking Classic Cartoon App

Talking Felix the CatClassic cartoon lovers will purr when they download their own Talking Felix the Cat app. Yes, there are other talking apps that can amuse you and your friends for literally minutes, but the Talking Felix the Cat is based on the classic cartoon character Felix the Cat. When you talk to him, he repeats what you say in his own voice. But you can also tickle him, make him dizzy and play his mini-game. He even brought his magical bag of tricks. See Talking Felix the Cat in action on YouTube, then download a bit of classic cartoon history for yourself.

Nickelodeon Celebrates Earth Day

SpongeBob's Last StandNickelodeon is celebrating Earth Day with a weekend full of exploring nature and helping the environment. Watch a never-before-seen episode of The Penguins of Madagascar, titled "Operation: Big Blue Marble," on Sunday, April 22, at 11:00 a.m. ET. The Penguins are faced with a global battle when their specialty food-making machine (combines fish and churros into dream food) belches out a toxic cloud that threatens not just the zoo, not just the city, but the earth itself.

Then watch the green-themed episode of SpongeBob SquarePants "SpongeBob's Last Stand." I dare you not to clap when Patrick and SpongeBob sing the jellyfishing song.

Plus, Nick.com will also go green with eco-themed games: Kung Fu Panda: Tales of Po, SpongeBob SquarePants: Spring Cleaning and SpongeBob SquarePants: Spring it On!. I feel my carbon footprint erasing itself already.

Nickelodeon Honors Ernest Borgnine

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy"Ee-viiil!" Nickelodeon will honor the late Ernest Borgnine with a two-hour SpongeBob SquarePants marathon featuring the actor as Mermaid Man, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, July 11. Nicktoons also will run the special line-up from 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. ET on Saturday, July 14.

Borgnine voiced the character alongside his former McHale's Navy co-star Tim Conway, who voiced Barnacle Boy. The duo brought not only comradery and flawless comedic chops to these retired superheroes, but also tongue-in-cheek humor for adults who know of the actors from their other work.

The marathon kicks off with the first episode featuring Borgnine, "Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy." While watching their favorite show, reruns of the TV duo superhero show Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, SpongeBob and Patrick hear that their beloved heroes are living in a nearby retirement home. The aging superheroes discover their toughest challenge yet will be SpongeBob and Patrick, who have decided the duo must come out of retirement.

The special programming block continues with "Mermaid Man II," "MermaidMan and Barnacle Boy III," "Superfriends," "Back to the Past," "The Bad Guy Club for Villains" and "Mermaidman Begins."

Axe Cop on FOX

FOXBack in January, I blogged that FOX had plans to dive into the Adult Swim pool with late-night animated comedy programming. Now FOX has announced the first cartoon that will air during that block.

Animation Domination HD, the new animation unit created by FOX, announced in a press release that they bought the rights to the web comic Axe Cop. Axe Cop will premiere as part of FOX's new Saturday late-night Animation Domination HD block, starting at 11:00 p.m. ET, debuting in 2013. So far, FOX's Animation Domination has ordered six 15-minute episodes of the series.

Axe Cop was created by then five-year-old Malachai Nicolle and his 29-year-old brother, Ethan, and chronicles the adventures of an axe-wielding police officer and his loyal team of allies as they fight bad guys. Written by Malachai and drawn by Ethan, the first five installments of Axe Cop were put online on January 25, 2010 and went viral in a matter of days. Three days after AxeCop.com went live, it was featured as Entertainment Weekly's "Site of the Day," and the series quickly became an Internet meme.

Whether or not FOX is successful with this new block of programming is hard to predict. In 2010, FOX tried burning off episodes of Sit Down, Shut Up on Saturday nights, ending up with small ratings. Plus, other web phenoms have met limited success when they jumped to TV, for instance Lil' Bush and Atom TV on Comedy Central. However, viral sensation Annoying Orange was picked up by Cartoon Network, and web series China, IL airs on Adult Swim.

Is FOX jumping on a trend or really looking to build a Saturday night audience? Regardless, they won't have much competition, but duplicating the cool factor of Adult Swim will be difficult.

Johnny Knoxville on SpongeBob

SpongeBob SquarePantsEither one of the writers on SpongeBob SquarePants was a fan of Jackass, the MTV series that featured Johnny and his posse of idiots performing fraternity-style stunts, or the target audience of SpongeBob SquarePants is now old enough to know who Johnny Knoxville is. I don't know which scenario is more disturbing.

On Saturday, July 21, at 8:00 p.m. ET on Nickelodeon, we can see "Extreme Spots," starring celebrity voice-over guest Johnny Knoxville as Johnny Krill, a member of The Drasticals extreme sports team. When The Drasticals come to town, their new super fans, SpongeBob and Patrick, try to do whatever it takes to join them, no matter how extreme - or dangerous. Whether attempting sand motor biking, hang gliding, seashell surfing or extreme bubble blowing, SpongeBob and Patrick undertake the challenge in an effort to demonstrate they're extreme.

But there's more! In "Squirrel Record," Sandy is determined to break a record number of world records, in record time, so SpongeBob joins her for an action-packed weekend of dangerous record setting! World's longest tooth, spiciest chili gargle and most chainsaws juggled are among the records Sandy is aiming to beat. (Doesn't SpongeBob remember "Prehibernation Week?" It nearly killed him!)

Then in "Demolition Doofus," Mrs. Puff enters SpongeBob into the Demolition Derby, where his bad driving makes him a star, and SpongeBob and Patrick bet who can hold a "funny face" the longest - until their faces freeze that way during "Face Freeze." Thank goodness Steve-O didn't guest star in that episode. Can you imagine that frozen face?

Annoying Orange Premiere Date

Annoying OrangeJust as the sun must die one day, to leave all humans to starve to death on Planet Earth, so, too, must there be a premiere date for Annoying Orange. The operative word in that title is "annoying." If you are unfamiliar with the YouTube phenomenon, Orange has a nasal voice and tells really bad jokes--a lot. He is joined by a cornucopia of fruit and vegetable friends, many who meet their Maker under the knife--literally. Now Cartoon Network is unleashing this monster of comedy in a half-hour cartoon that will feature Orange and his friends (as well as his nemesis, Grapefruit) as they (wait for it) travel through time, solving problems and mysteries as they go.

You can watch this debacle starting June 11 at 8:30 p.m. ET on Cartoon Network. I say "debacle," but if you are 9 years old, I'm sure you'll love it.

Korra Will Return

The Legend of KorraNickelodeon just made my summer. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Avatar Korra will be back not only next year, but also for 26 episodes beyond that. Season 1, Book 1 ended with a one-hour finale on June 23. Book 2 will air in 2013 with 13 more episodes. Beyond that, Nickelodeon ordered 26 episodes that will presumably be split into Book 3 and Book 4.

I doubt The Legend of Korra, which is the sequel to Avatar: The Last Airbender, will go beyond Book 4. The original Avatar series had only three seasons, or Books, one for each element Aang had to master. Keeping a limit on the number of episodes allows the writers to plan a cohesive and compelling story, rather than dragging out storylines and boring the audience.

But what lies in store for Korra in the other Books? Amon is dead, thanks to Tarlok's sacrifice. Will each book feature a different villain for Korra to defeat? Or are we navigating into uncharted waters? The creators are so, well, creative, I wouldn't be surprised if The Legend of Korra winds up with a story structure that defies typical TV episodes.

Emmy Nominations 2012

Bob's BurgersEmmy nominations were announced in the wee hours of the morning, heralding the beginning of the awards season, which lasts almost as long as hockey season. For the first time in several years, South Park was not nominated. However, seeing new names on the ballot for voice-over performance is a pleasant surprise. Following are nominees for the big categories in animated TV.
Picture courtesy of Twentieth Century Fox.

Outstanding Animated Progam: American Dad for "Hot Water;" The Penguins of Madagascar for "The Return Of The Revenge Of Dr. Blowhole;" Futurama for "The Tip Of The Zoidberg;" Bob's Burgers for "BurgerBoss" (woo hoo!); The Simpsons for "Holidays Of Future Passed."
Predicted Winner: Bob's Burgers for "BurgerBoss," because not only is the show brilliant, but also Emmy voters sometimes give props to the new kid on the block.

Short-Format Animated Program: Phineas and Ferb for "The Doonkleberry Imperative;" MAD for "Kitchen Nightmare Before Christmas / How I Met Your Mummy;" Regular Show for "Eggscellent;" Adventure Time for "Too Young;" Robot Chicken for "Fight Club Paradise."
Predicted Winner: Adventure Time for "Too Young," because that show is hot, hot, hot.

Voice-Over Performance: Dan Povenmire as Doctor Doofenshmirtz in Phineas and Ferb "Across The 2nd Dimension;" Maurice LaMarche (last year's winner) as Calculon / Clamps / Donbot / Hedonismbot / Hyperchicken / Morbo in Futurama "The Silence Of The Clamps ;" Brenda Strong as Mary-Alice Young in Desperate Housewives "Give Me The Blame / Finishing The Hat;" Hank Azaria as Carl / Chief Wiggum / Comic Book Guy / Duffman / Mexican Duffman / Moe Szyslak in The Simpsons "Moe Goes From Rags To Riches;" Rob Riggle as Noel in Disney Prep & Landing: Naughty Vs. Nice; Kristen Wiig as Lola in The Looney Tunes Show "Double Date."
Predicted Winner: Rob Riggle as Noel in Disney Prep & Landing: Naughty Vs. Nice, because he's a talented mainstay in TV. He may get the nod as a way to honor all the top-notch work he provides on the variety of shows where he's been a guest star. Plus, Disney has the bucks to put together a heavy campaign for him.

Super Unsupervised

Bob's BurgersFX has been in the forefront of networks with quality TV shows for several years, with hits like Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me and now American Horror Story. After Archer premiered three seasons ago, it stepped into the arena of animated comedy. Now FX is building on that cartoon's success by pairing it with Unsupervised on Thursday nights. Unsupervised is at the opposite end of the spectrum from Archer in terms of the income bracket of the characters, the down home setting and subtle humor. However, Unsupervised is a refreshing and funny take on being a teenager. Read my full review of Unsupervised.
