Broadcasters Will Add Ratings to Online Shows

In a press release, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, TeleFutura, Telemundo and Univision announced these networks will begin putting ratings on their online content beginning December 1, 2012. "Parents will now be able use the TV ratings system when children access broadcast television programs on the Internet. The networks are making the ratings information available for all full-length entertainment programs that stream on the websites that they control. Each company will determine its own systems, and the networks have committed that the TV ratings will appear at the beginning of full-length video programs and also in the online programming descriptions. Network websites will also include or link to ratings system information. This commitment is effective for rated programming televised beginning December 1, 2012.

However, that party pooper known as the Parents Television Council calls the announcement "half-hearted" and says in their press release, "Unfortunately, if the online rating system is similar to the current television rating system, then this move is a distinction without difference. PTC has proven time and time again that the TV content ratings system is a facade, citing inaccurate and inconsistent ratings designated by the networks themselves with no accountability."

Crikey, who is spending time watching entire episodes of a show to compare it with what the ratings say should be in that episode? If the ratings system is failing you, here's an innovative idea: Watch a show with your kid, or even without your kid, to decide whether or not they should be watching it, then apply your decision.

I agree the networks are a little behind the times when it comes to putting a rating on their online content, but how hard is it to look up a show to see what its TV rating is? I have little patience for people who are too caught up in pickiune details to do the work themselves. Moreover, don't parents know how fat their kids are getting and that they shouldn't be watching cartoons anyway? Take that, PTC!
